I have a list of things I should be doing. Things that are important to me; that are imperative to my goals and aspirations. Also, things of minimal importance; that just simply need to get done. Folding clothes, the dishes, following up on emails and calls.
But I’m having a bad day; well, more than a bad day --a disheartening day, a sad day, a frustrating day, a defeated day. So therefore, I don’t feel like doing any of it. I have zero ambition. All of my energy has been used up on stress, anxiety, anxiousness and frustration. So I literally feel like taking a nap, even though I’m not actually tired. Ugh!
Here’s the thing: When we’re feeling this slump, this collapse, it is simple; we must understand that we’re not going to “feel like it”. We’re simply not going to feel like our career pursuits are worthy of the effort or time. That call we need to make, that meeting we need to contribute to, or that presentation we really need to nail just feels so unimportant because we really don’t feel like it.
The laundry in the dryer that needs to be folded and put away, the lawn that needs to be mowed, or the sink of dirty dishes that needs to be rectified are just chores that we really don’t feel like doing.
Maybe we’ll feel like it tomorrow. So let’s not push the envelope today.
Let’s revel in this bad day and let it take us down. We won’t get our workout in. We won’t accomplish the things that would honestly make us feel better, if we did indeed accomplish them!
Or, let’s not! Here’s the other thing: Just because we don’t “feel like it” doesn’t mean we shouldn’t accomplish it, tackle it, get it done. This is what I’ve come to know: Even if I reluctantly and negatively embark on the important or non-important task ahead of me, once I start it, I begin falling into it. I feel better now, than when I had felt avoiding it. It feels much better to do something!
Even though, I completely didn’t feel like pursuing anything.
Here’s what I want us to take from this: make an action, DO SOMETHING, even if you don’t feel like it. Walk, run, fold clothes, do dishes, go to workout class, drink a glass of water. The initial trek is the hardest. Once you get past the “I don’t feel like it” feeling, I promise you; you will feel like it!
